734 passengers and crew were on board,  and 53 of them died from the crash.

On 10 April 1968, one of New Zealands largest storms ever recorded struck. Also wrong judgement  was made with the weather from the Ferry and from shore were made, and the radar system failed on the day, causing The Wahine to be pushed into Barrett reef.
